Broken Bones and Broken Hearts

Mother of the year strikes again. I was rushing to get out the door on Friday morning. I put Lydia on a little stool to do her hair. We finished her hair and she toppled right off of the stool. She was obviously hurting, but couldn't tell me where. She cried a bit, but then she was fine for the most part. Every now and then she would start crying for no apparent reason, but she's quite an emotional girl so it was par for the course.

We went a couple days like this (I feel like an awesome mom). She was mostly her happy self, but every once in a while she'd break down. She had been rolling around on the grass, hanging from things, running around, etc. Josh finally noticed her wince when he was getting her dressed for church. He poked around and pin-pointed her wrist as the pain spot. We were sure it wasn't anything serious because of the way she had been acting.
We took her to instacare after church because we wanted to be able to rule out the possibility of a break...We were absolutely shocked when the doctor returned from looking at the x-ray and said, "your daughter has a broken wrist-both bones." I'm sure our faces were absolutely blank as we tried to digest what she had just said. And just like that, we were the worst parents in the world.
It just breaks our hearts to know that she was hurting all those days and we didn't even realize why. I feel especially bad that she sustained a serous injury on my watch.
I’m amazed at how quickly she has adapted. I think the most traumatic part for her was having weird people touching her arm and putting strange things on her. As my five-year-old niece Maddison always says, "Lydia doesn't like being man-handled."

This was taken right after we got home from instacare-she barely skipped a beat!

Grandma Estelle came home for her P-day and we went to Build-a-Bear to make Lydia feel better.

The grandmas had a ton of fun helping Lydia choose her little Kitty and accessories. Thanks, Grandmas!!

Lydia is obsessed with the cat that she chose.

We went straight from Build-a-Bear to the pediatrician(you have to keep your priorities straight).

The Dr. said the swelling had gone down enough for a hard cast. In my prayers tonight I thanked for the movie Cars that was playing as they were casting Lydie's arm. Thanks to that movie it turned out to be a pretty painless experience.(You'll notice her gaze in each shot)

Now she has to wear this lethal weapon for four weeks. Watch out nursery kids, it's payback time!

Aww, that's so sad! I can see that she's quite happy; I hope she gets better soon anyway. And you are definitely not the worst parents in the world.

This sounds like something that could happen to my son. He is always jumping off of things and pulling stunts, and I swear at this age it is hard to know what is wrong. You're a fantastic mom - I think kids are just used to dealing with pain with all their teeth coming in and everything...

BTW I do know what you mean about feeling like a bad parent whenever something goes wrong... you want more than anything to be able to protect your kids, so when you can't it makes you feel so terrible.

Shoot!!

If it makes you feel better, it took my mom several hours to figure out my leg was broken. And that was on my first birthday. She felt AWESOME.

Never ever say you are a bad mom, cause I know your not!! Accidents happen. It's just part of life.

I hope the 4 weeks go by quickley for you!!

Oh, Em, you're not a bad mom. Such things happen to the best of us.
Lydia is getting so big and more beautiful everyday.

Oh, how sad for both of you. We all know how you feel. Looks like Lydia doesn't hold a grudge with the happy way she is bouncing back!

Hello dear... remember me? So that is so sad about lydia's little wrist. Don't feel like bad parents though. I had a broken foot when I was 6 years old for 3 months before my parents took me to the doctor. At that point they had to rebreak it. At least that didn't happen. :)

Poor Lydia! What a tough cookie. Hope she is doing better now. Don't be to hard on your self, Emily. Allie still has permanent dents in her head from falling.

Leave it to kids to make you doubt your capablities as a human being, much less a parent. Doesn't it just make you feel like an idiot in front of the doctor? "She what?!" or in my case "What do you mean she's had an ear infection that has now burst her eardrum?" On the bright side, Lydia is probably the cutest two year old I've ever seen in a cast. And her cousin is spot on with the man-handling thing!

Oh, Emily! What a deal! Sorry to hear about her spill. I too have won the mother of the year award on a handful of occasions. You (and me) are in good company!

I'm sorry, you don't know me, but I just have to say: THIS is why I love working in a children's hospital. NO it's not sad! Kids are the most resilient little buggers you've ever known! I broke one wrist bone and I thought I was dying. WTG, kid!
